Almost 50% of individuals Called to the Bar are women, yet this figure drops to only 35% when related to the number of female practising barristers.
The survey, designed to understand these figures and the experience of female barristers, must be welcomed.
It is not acceptable that the number of practising female barristers has not changed in over half a decade. This is a problem and there must be solutions to address it. A profession that requires top talent, also requires a diverse workforce, including retaining those female barristers with brilliant legal minds.
Disproportionate numbers of women barristers are giving up the profession, according to a legal regulator. The Bar Standards Board also says the percentage of women practising as barristers - 35% - has not changed for six years. Board bosses, who regulate and monitor barristers' behaviour, have launched a survey of the experiences of women barristers in a bid to find out how well equality rules are working.
