This innovative new venture by gunnercooke is a fantastic opportunity for young lawyers to gain invaluable, real life experience. The business side of a law firm is just as important as the work lawyers carry out on a daily basis for their clients.
All young lawyers starting out in their careers should be equipped with these skills as they will eventually become the lawyers of the future, with the responsibility of ensuring the success of their law firms.
Other law firms may wish to adopt this forward-thinking approach and consider how they invest in their young lawyers in a more commercially focused legal sector.
A Manchester practice has created a separate firm to act as a nursery for young lawyers to learn the business. Gunnerbloom, an offshoot of established firm gunnercooke, will be staffed by junior lawyers who will be given responsibility for generating leads and running the business. The firm will be based in the Manchester Escalator building, the city’s hub for entrepreneurs, with gunnercooke partner Sarah Goulbourne installed in compliance officer roles. The ‘parent’ firm has made it clear the subsidiary will not be expected to make any profit in its early years.
